Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has revealed how the state government plans to get money to pay the ₦70,000 minimum salary that was just approved for state public personnel.
Speaking to reporters in Benin, the state capital, Obaseki said that the state government’s influx of money and business-friendly policies will be used to support the authorized minimum wage.
He went on to say that savings from government spending that came about as a result of the strategic changes he oversaw would likewise be put to use.
“The funding for the new minimum wage will be sourced from various avenues, including savings from our state’s fleet management system, the adoption of the e-gov platform, which has eliminated the need for paper-based transactions, and investments in projects like the Ossiomo Power Project, which has significantly reduced government spending on diesel,” Governor Obaseki explained.
The minimum wage in Edo State was raised by Obaseki from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000.
The governor declared that beginning of May 1, 2024, the higher minimum wage would be in place.
At the launching of the recently constructed, state-of-the-art Labour House administrative complex for labor unions, located along Temboga Road in Ikpoba-Hill, Benin City, he made the statement.
The Governor gave a speech in which he explained his decision to raise workers’ wages from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000 per month, citing the country’s economic woes.
Obaseki made this revelation on Wednesday, May 1, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City during the May Day celebration.
