Babatunji Wusu –
At least 11 people, including five children, tragically lost their lives in a recent fishing boat capsize that happened in Rivers State, sending residents into sadness.
The terrible occurrence occurred on Tuesday in the Andoni-Bonny waterways of the Andoni local government area in Rivers State, according to reports provided to journalists.
When a strong wave hit the boat, it broke into two parts, which is how the tragedy happened.
At the time, the boat was said to have carried a total of 25 passengers.
Unfortunately, when the accident occurred, no rescue crew arrived at the spot, so the passengers had to fight for themselves in the sea.
When rescue operations finally got underway, eleven passengers had already perished. Fortunately, 14 more people were saved.
According to a source cited by Leadership, attempts are still underway to recover the eight remaining bodies, of which three have already been retrieved.
The majority of those killed in the boat accident were residents of Ngo Town, Ataba, Isiama, and other nearby settlements, according to Hon. Erastus Awortu, the chairman of the Andoni local government area council, who confirmed the occurrence to reporters.
In a statement made available to reporters in Port Harcourt, Awortu stated that the situation was being watched in order to provide additional assistance, particularly in order to provide the survivors with the essential medical care and retrieve the deceased people’s bodies from the water.
He pledged to use all of his resources to lessen the anguish experienced by the impacted communities and the relatives of the deceased.
