The 163 residents abducted from Woro community in Kwara State have returned home and reunited with their families after receiving medical care following their rescue.
The victims were among residents taken during the February 3 attack on Woro, in Kaiama Local Government Area. Security forces later rescued them during a coordinated operation in the Kainji Lake National Park forest.
The freed residents spent more than two weeks receiving medical attention in Ilorin before returning to Kaiama.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Chief Press Secretary, MD Baniya, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
Baniya said the 163 abductees travelled back to Kaiama under the escort of Kaiama Local Government Chairman Abubakar Danladi, the Emir of Kaiama, Omar Shehu Muazu, and the Kiwazi of Wojibe, Ahmed Ibn Mohammad.
The return sparked emotional scenes as relatives welcomed their loved ones after anxiously waiting for their release. Danladi also personally ensured that the victims travelled safely from Ilorin to Kaiama after completing their medical care.
The Kaiama council chairman praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq for their roles in efforts that secured the victims’ freedom.
“I express our profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his fatherly concern and unwavering support.
“We are equally grateful to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his intervention and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of every citizen of Kwara State.”
Danladi also recognised the support of Kwara State House of Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, saying his advocacy and solidarity remained important throughout the ordeal.
“We appreciate the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi, for his relentless advocacy and solidarity throughout the ordeal,” he said.
He further thanked the Emir of Kaiama and the Kaiama Emirate Council for their prayers, guidance and moral support while the victims remained in captivity.
The reunion marks an important moment for the Woro abductees, who can now begin rebuilding their lives with their families.
