28 Immigrants Escaped Death In Cyprus

Cypriot rescuers scrambled on Thursday to save a group of 28 irregular immigrants after a drifting boat was spotted off the southeast shores of Cyprus, a police statement said.

It added that the group included nine children and 19 adults.

The rescue mission ended when the refugee boat was helped into a fishing harbor in the tourist region of Paralimni, about 15 km from the area it was spotted.

“A police boat spotted the migrants and then moved swiftly to the area to carry out a rescue mission. At around 10 a.m. the police launch escorted their boat to the fishing harbor,” the police statement said.

Irregular migration in Cyprus has risen this year, with the majority of them being Syrian refugees.
