The Nigerian Army’s 81 Division soldiers stopped Francesca Spark from jumping into the Lagos lagoon near the Officers’ Mess in Marina, Lagos, in an effort to commit suicide.
On Monday, November 6, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, revealed this in a statement.
The statement read, “The troops of 65 Battalion NA deployed at the Officers’ Mess, who sighted Mrs Spark quickly used their military riverine skills and ingenuity to rescue her. “She was given first aid and stabilized by the battalion medical team. After stabilization, the family was contacted and she was handed over to her husband, one Mr Spark Oghene Ovie residing at Awoyaya Lagos. ”
Major General Muhammad Usman, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, also praised the soldiers for their bravery, inventiveness, and attention to detail.
The General Officer expressed his satisfaction with the soldiers using their crisis management expertise to avert a potentially fatal incident involving a fellow citizen.
The Nigerian Army is committed to protecting civilians and their property, he said, adding that the troops have been trained to help leading authorities during emergencies.
