At the weekend, it was reported that eight young girls drowned in a river in the Garin Unguwar Kurya neighborhood of Kokani ward in Jega town, Jega local government region, in Kebbi State.
Two of them were rescued by a team of rescue workers, but one was confirmed dead while the other, who sustained injuries, was taken to the general hospital in Jega, our correspondent learned from a local, Hon. Faruk Aliyu Nassarwa Jega, the majority leader in the state House of Assembly.
As the rescue squad continued their search, Hon. Nassarwa reported that the remaining six girls were still missing in the river.
In order to comfort the parents on behalf of the people and government of Kebbi State, Governor Nasir Idris has dispatched a delegation under the direction of Kabiru Sani Giant, his special adviser on politics and power.
Kabir Giant asked God to overlook the deceased’s faults and pleaded with the parents to endure their loss.
Abbas Rabiu Kamba, executive director of the Kebbi State Emergency Relief Management Agency (KSEMA), announced that the organization had sent a rescue team to the river to look for the other six victims.
Before starting any river trip, he encouraged canoe owners to always get approval from KSEMA or NEMA officials.
