At least 90 people lost their lives in a tragic petrol tanker explosion on Tuesday night in Majiya, a town located in the Taura local government area of Jigawa State. This was confirmed by Mr. Shi’isu Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
According to Adam, the explosion also left 50 others hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries. The incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. near Khadija University, when the tanker driver, who was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe, lost control of the vehicle, leading to the deadly blast.
Despite repeated warnings from law enforcement advising the public to steer clear of accident scenes involving fuel tankers, a crowd had gathered, resulting in the high number of casualties.
A mass burial for the victims has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
