The Rivers State Government has visited Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area following a gas pipeline explosion that injured residents and damaged property.
Officials from the Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources, and Environment, travelled to the affected community to assess the destruction and offer comfort to those affected by the incident.
During the visit, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, James Ngochindo, said the team would submit its findings to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other relevant agencies. The report will include the concerns raised by residents and help the authorities determine the appropriate steps to take.
Ngochindo also commended the people of Aleto for remaining calm despite the difficulties caused by the gas pipeline blast.
The explosion occurred last Thursday and reportedly left several people injured. Buildings and vehicles in the community also suffered damage, adding to the losses faced by residents.
The government delegation’s visit provided an opportunity to see the impact of the explosion first-hand and hear directly from those affected. The concerns raised during the visit are expected to form part of the report to the governor and relevant agencies.
The traditional ruler of Eleme, King Philip Osaro Obele, expressed appreciation to the state government for visiting the community after the incident.
However, the monarch also called on the authorities to take stronger action to protect the area and improve essential facilities. He urged them to give greater “priority to safeguarding the environment and improving infrastructure in the area.”
The visit comes amid concerns over the injuries, property damage and environmental safety issues linked to the Aleto gas pipeline explosion.
What further measures should the government take to improve pipeline safety and protect communities such as Aleto?
