Arsenal have lost their appeal against the red card shown to 16-year-old Max Dowman during Tuesday’s League Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town.

The English Football Association (FA) confirmed on Thursday that an independent regulatory commission had rejected the club’s appeal against both the dismissal and the severity of the punishment.

Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute after kicking out at Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge. Arsenal were reduced to 10 players and eventually lost 5-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1.

The decision means the teenager will serve a three-match suspension. The FA said the commission’s written reasons for rejecting the appeal would be released later.

Dowman will miss Arsenal’s upcoming domestic fixtures against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United.

He will become available for domestic selection again when Arsenal host Manchester City on November 29.

However, the suspension will not affect his participation in European competitions. This means Dowman remains eligible for Arsenal’s Champions League match against Slavia Prague on November 4.

The decision is a setback for Arsenal, who had challenged the dismissal in an attempt to overturn the red card and reduce the punishment.
