The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Mr Sam Onuigbo, has sought the creation of laws and formulation of policies to address gender inequality as well as guarantee women’s empowerment, access to finance and education.

According to Onuigbo, this is important and necessary because when a woman is trained, a nation is built.

The lawmaker also called for an increase in women’s participation in the renewable energy sector. This, he said, will empower them economically while they help in the fight against climate change.

Onuigbo noted that from his experiences, women have the incomparable ability to mobilise and motivate people to action, and as key players in the renewable energy sector, will initiate and execute massive strides towards the attainment of the use of sustainable energy sources and the protection of the environment.

The lawmaker, who is Vice President (Africa) of Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment International, made the call in his presentation at the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Legislators Forum held in Abu Dhabi recently.

In the speech sent to our correspondent on Friday, the lawmaker, who spoke on ‘Measures to Improve Women’s Engagement in the Renewables Sector,’ stated that women are passionate and committed drivers for positive change in societies, and as such should be engaged in the renewable energy sector through laws, strategies and deliberate policies.

He noted that the move would not only combat climate change but also make the green economy achievable.
