In order to compete for the LaLiga and Europa League championships, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez stated his team needed to put its Champions League disappointment behind it as quickly as possible and concentrate on improving its performance.

After Barcelona’s 3-0 home loss to Bayern Munich in Group C on Wednesday, the coach made no excuses. The team knew going into the game that it had already been eliminated from the tournament following Inter Milan’s 4-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen earlier in the day.

Barcelona finished third in their group for the second consecutive year, winning just one of their five games. They will now compete in the second-tier Europa League.

“We must face this reality because it is our reality. Perhaps we required a battering in order to mature—maybe that’s what we needed,” Xavi Hernandez said at a press conference at Camp Nou.

“Today was already over; it was too late to take action. We failed to be effective up front in the previous games, which is the fundamental reason we found ourselves in this scenario.

We leave with a terribly unpleasant feeling, but we must regroup and recommit to competing for the remaining titles.

The loss dealt Barcelona more damage after it lost the LaLiga lead due to a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in “El Clasico” the previous week.

That followed a 3-3 tie with Inter Milan, which put it in danger of losing its Champions League spot.

The match against Inter, in which we lost control of our own destiny, “struck me the most, and I thought it was incredibly harsh for our squad,” Xavi stated.

“But we must remain united. Tonight, our supporters were fantastic; it was wonderful to see more than 85,000 there at Camp Nou cheering us on all the way to the finish. Unfortunately, we didn’t show up on the field.

There are still more competitions to compete in. Although it’s a setback, we must be self-critical if we want to claim such titles.
