According to the Kaduna State Police Command, a plot to kidnap 76 people along the Funtua-Zaria Road was thwarted by quick action by the police and the military.
The incident happened on Friday about 11:00 p.m., according to a statement released on Monday in Kaduna by the command’s spokesman, DSP Muhammad Jalige.
According to him, a huge group of armed bandits who were blocking a part of the Funtua-Zaria Road in Gulbala, Giwa Local Government Area, with sophisticated weaponry attempted to kidnap the victim.
The attackers, who had already herded some passengers into the jungle, were foiled, according to Jalige, who claimed that a combined team of police and military personnel mobilized to the scene.
When they arrived, they discovered a Ford open truck, and they learned that the bandits had pushed many of the vehicle’s occupants off the road.
“This development prompted the operators to launch an immediate search and rescue effort in the nearby woodland.
The bandits were encountered during this process, and due to the security operatives’ overwhelming firepower, they were forced to abandon their evil plan and flee while still hurt.
“The crack operators succeeded in the rescue of a large number of victims totaling 76 comprising males and girls of varied ages after thoroughly searching the woodland over several hours,” he added.
According to Jalige, early investigations showed that the victims were being transported by truck from Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area to various locations when they were abducted.
Operations are still ongoing in the general region to look for the primary truck driver and two additional passengers who have not yet been located, the official said.
According to Jalige, Yekini Ayoku, Commissioner of Police, highlighted the development as a significant advancement and a case study for the necessity of effective inter-service cooperation.
He gave the assurance that inter-agency coordination and cooperation will be reinforced to protect the public area from foreign foes.
