The Netherlands defeated Qatar 2-0 on Tuesday to cap off the worst performance by a World Cup host nation.
The Qataris, who were already out, became the first hosts to lose all three of its group matches at soccer’s biggest event as the Dutch advanced to the round of 16.
With his third goal in as many games, Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead midway through the first half. Five minutes into the second half, Frenkie de Jong increased the lead.
In 2014, while Qatar was making its World Cup debut, the Netherlands, a three-time runner-up, also placed third.
The Netherlands were unable to make it to the 2018 World Cup.
