Prof. Banji Akintoye, the leader of the supreme body of the Yoruba self-determination fight, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, has resigned.

According to reports, Akintoye resigned due to reported infighting among members of the self-determination group.

However, in a statement issued on Thursday to announce Akintoye’s decision, the group’s General Secretary, Tunde Amusat, stated that the former Yoruba Nation leader turned over leadership to his former Deputy, Prof. Wale Adeniran.

Amusat stated Akintoye was handed over the leadership mantle to Adeniran due to old age and a compromised bodily system.

According to Amusat, on December 17th, 2022, the worldwide congress of Ilana Omo Oodua accepted Akintoye’s resignation and confirmed Adeniran as the group’s new leader.

He further stated that the proposed constitutional modification confirming Adeniran’s status as Chairman will be introduced at the next worldwide congress before the end of this year for ratification by registered members.

“Akintoye hailed the principled characteristics of Adeniran, commending him for his constant forbearance despite all types of blackmail, slanders and defamatory affirmations which had been launched against him in the past by individuals he (Akintoye) described as “disgruntled elements”.

“Adeniran is a retired Assistant Professor of African Studies and Osun State’s first Commissioner for Education. “He is from Ile-Ife,” according to the statement.
