The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has revealed that 44,414,846 registered voters are females, while 49,054,162 are males in the 2023 general election.
Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, made this disclosure on Wednesday during a meeting with political party leaders at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Yakubu presented the 2023 voter register to the leaders of the 18 political parties in preparation for the elections mandated by the 2022 Electoral Act.
The commission had presented a voter list with 93,469,008 names for the general elections in 2023.
The number of young people between the ages of 18 and 34 registered voters stood at 37,060,399, representing 39.65% of total registered voters, while the elderly between the ages of 50 and 69 registered voters stood at 17,700,270, representing 18.94% of total registered voters.
Meanwhile, the commission has dismissed talk of postponing the 2023 general elections.
The commission reiterated its commitment to holding the upcoming general elections on time.
Yakubu stated that the commission has no plans to postpone the general elections scheduled for February and March of this year.
“The commission is not considering any changes to the election schedule, let alone postponing the general elections,” he said. The repeated assurances from security agencies that personnel and the process will be adequately protected strengthens our resolve to proceed.
“The general elections in 2023 will take place as planned. “Any report to the country is not the commission’s official position,” he stated.
