Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has reaffirmed his resolve to securing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate release from custody as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This information was revealed by Soludo on Monday during a statewide briefing that was intended to inform the people of Anambra of his governmental activities.
He claimed to have scheduled a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and was waiting for the time to speak with him about security-related matters in the South East, specifically the release of Kanu.
The governor demanded Kanu’s release during the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) campaign launch in Awka and offered to act as a surety for Kanu if the federal government found it difficult to grant him an unconditional freedom.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, responded to Soludo’s plea by stating that Soludo had just made a statement and had not requested Kanu’s release through the court or his office.
However, during the quarterly briefing, Soludo stated that he hoped to visit President Buhari and discuss the necessity of releasing Kanu with him.
He claimed that Kanu’s release will enable him to intervene in situations where some groups utilize secessionist agitation to support criminal activity.
Regarding Nnamdi Kanu, he said: “His release does not imply that insecurity will be entirely eliminated. The decision is best for the South East region as a whole.
“When I visited Kanu in prison, he (Kanu) was pained by the degree of crime linked to the agitation. It was an abomination, he said.
“Everyone has turned into a freedom fighter today, using it as a cover for their criminal activity. The truth is that he will be able to tell the difference between real freedom fighters and criminals if he is allowed to go free.
“A political issue is still keeping him from moving forward. To officially deliver the letter to the President, I am expecting appointment confirmation.
