Blackpool, an English second-tier team, expressed its “deep horror” over the death of a fan who was involved in a scuffle in a bar following their match against Burnley on Saturday.
The supporter, identified as Tony Johnson, 55, was discovered outside a bar on the Blackpool seaside with severe head injuries.
In a statement released on Monday, Blackpool FC said that it was “truly surprised and grieved” to hear that Tony Johnson, a supporter, had tragically passed away earlier in the day.
A 33-year-old Burnley man was detained at the scene on suspicion of wounding and later released on bail pending additional investigations until June 1, according to Lancashire police.
“Mr. Johnson sadly passed away in the hospital overnight, and his family is naturally saddened. DI Tracey McMurdo of the Lancashire Police stated, “We are helping them through this trying time and are determined to get them answers about what happened.
