The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) leader, DCP Tunji Disu, has been listed for promotion to Commissioner of Police by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) (CP).
According to reports, Disu and the other 32 officers were chosen as those who met the requirements for advancement for their selfless devotion to the command and to people all around the nation.
The senior police officers will go before a panel of interviewers on Tuesday when they will be challenged to justify why they should be elevated to the CP rank, according to a source acquainted with the issue who was quoted by the online newspaper.
Zubairu Abubakar, Godwin Eze, Clement Robert, Patrick Atayero, Nwonyi Emeka, Musibau Ajani, Tolani Alausa, and Abubakar Aliyu are among those scheduled to participate in the Police Service Commission’s (PSC) promotion interview.
Others include Chukwudi ChrisObaemi Adesanya, Audu Dabigi, Hayatu Ali, Garba Ahmed, Fasuba Akinyele, Emuobo Ekokotu, Gyogon Grimah, and Zakaria Sanda.
Unless there are significant hiccups, the top police officers will assemble at Force headquarters today before traveling to the PSC secretariat to take part in the promotion interview, according to the police source.
All those attending the promotion interview, particularly Disu, claimed that they had earned the position due to their long-term efforts to defend people and their property across the nation.
One of the top names on the list is Disu, who was chosen by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Alkali Baba to succeed Abba Kyari as IRT commander in August 2021.
He was well-known for overhauling the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) after being appointed as IRT commander in June 2015.
The Lagos State Government developed and sponsored RRS, a specialized security unit, to act as the metropolitan police and uphold peace and order throughout the state’s ins and outs as well as in the city.
Disu rebranded the squad, whose officers were known as #TheGoodGuys, as one of her first actions as RRS commander.
It was a mindset-shifting tactic to re-orient the RRS officers and get them to accept that they hold a sensitive public position and must act responsibly while rigorously adhering to the fundamental concepts of law enforcement, which include the protection of people and their property.
Disu’s RRS was one of the few shining examples in a police force that the public had a negative opinion on overall.
His approach to policing is based on the idea of “Policing by Consent,” with a focus on the four elements of engagement, education, explanation, and enforcement of the law (the “4Es”).
In order to maintain law and order, the notion essentially calls for involving the populace, teaching them, explaining the law to them, and finally executing it.
Disu’s pragmatic and revolutionary leadership as commander of the RRS led to the training of officers in emotional intelligence, anger control and management, and crisis de-escalation.
RRS officers were similarly trained in First Aid and CPR to assist save lives because they are frequently the first responders in emergencies.
Positive outcomes came from Disu’s efforts to enforce proper conduct among police officers.
RRS personnel transported a woman in labor from her home in Ikoyi to the hospital during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 after spotting her husband on the road in the early morning hours in distress and frantically seeking assistance. She eventually gave birth to a girl.
Disu, who frequently praised his men’s heroic efforts, lavishly compensated the afflicted commanders.
Disu reportedly released the ambulances under his charge during the EndSARS demonstrations against police brutality in 2020 to assist demonstrators who required medical attention.
Disu previously served as the Deputy Head of the Unit at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for Rivers Command before being promoted to the command of the Lagos RRS and IRT. He was also the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Directorate of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Disu has had some success throughout his time leading the IRT.
The Force Intelligence Bureau Intelligence Response Squad (FIB-IRT), which is led by Disu, received praise from the IGP in July 2022 for recent accomplishments, which included the capture of a fraud ring that specialized in hacking into the bank accounts of both private individuals and corporate entities.
