Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, a midfielder for Luton Town, is set to make history on Saturday at Wembley Stadium as part of the team’s incredible tale of overcoming adversity.
Mpanzu will be the first player to go from non-league football to the top tier with the same team if the Hatters win the Championship Playoff Final against Coventry City and are promoted to the Premier League.
He said at a press conference, “Yeah man, not a lot of people do it,” before realizing his goof right away.
He chuckled, “Well, nobody’s done it yet. “There are 90 minutes left in the game. We shall (hopefully) be sipping champagne by Saturday night at 7 o’clock.
The 29-year-old midfielder was loaned to Luton by West Ham United in 2013, and in the 366 games since then, he has established himself as a key member of the squad as they advanced from non-league play in his debut season to the Championship, spending four years in League 2 and just one in League 1.
“Premier League is currently the world’s most prestigious league. It’s an incredible testament to him that he might succeed in that, said John Still, the former manager of Luton who signed Mpanzu after meeting with him and his mother.
When Mpanzu first saw Kenilworth Road, the team’s run-down stadium that gets sneers from outsiders, he wasn’t exactly sold on the organization.
Mpanzu rubbed his face with his hand, “I was like: aw, man,” recalling the incident. “But listen, in the end, everything worked out. Since then, it has been an adventure.
The Hatters advanced to the final with a dramatic 2-0 victory in front of a euphoric crowd at Kenilworth Road, who celebrated as if promotion was already secured. The Hatters defeated Sunderland 3-2 on aggregate in their playoff semi-final.
In a video message to his followers, Mpanzu said, “We’ve got one more – see you at Wembley.”
With promotion, Luton would match Wimbledon’s feat of rising from non-league to the top division in just nine years.
