Mauricio Pochettino has been named Chelsea’s head coach, the Premier League club announced on Monday.

In a formal announcement, the club said, “Chelsea Football Club is pleased to confirm Mauricio Pochettino will become head coach of the men’s team from the beginning of the 2023/24 season.”

The Argentine will start in his new position on July 1, 2023, under a two-year deal with a one-year club option.

Pochettino will be Todd Boehly’s second manager hire; the first was Graham Potter, who was fired following a run of poor results that placed Chelsea in danger of being relegated.

After the current campaign, the Argentine will take over for temporary manager Frank Lampard.

“Mauricio is a top-notch coach with a stellar resume. The owners of Chelsea released a statement in which they expressed their eagerness to have him join the team.

Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Sebastiano Pochettino will be part of his Chelsea staff.

“Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities, and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward,” said co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

“He is a successful coach with experience at the highest levels, in numerous leagues, and in other languages. He was the ideal candidate due to his ethos, tactical strategy, and dedication to growth.

Before joining Spurs in 2014, Pochettino, who prefers a high-pressing and offensive style of play, developed a reputation for developing young talent and guided Southampton to an eighth-place finish in his first full season in England.

Since his tenure as manager of Paris Saint-Germain in the 2021–22 season, Pochettino has not been in charge of any other team.

The 51-year-old gained notoriety while playing for Tottenham Hotspur for five years, where he also made the 2019 Champions League final.
