Marco Asensio, a winger for Real Madrid, announced on social media on Saturday that he would be leaving the team at the end of the current campaign.
“I speak to you while feeling a knot in my throat and conflicting emotions in my heart. Asensio posted on Twitter, “It’s difficult to put into words all I’m feeling right now, but I think it’s vital to do so to fully finish this chapter of my life.
“I loved wearing this magnificent white T-shirt since I was a very small child, when I was just starting out in soccer. My greatest desire, my hope, and my passion all became Real Madrid. And because the club put its trust in me, I’ve had the honor of realizing that dream throughout these beautiful years.
Although speculations have connected the Spain international to French champions Paris Saint-Germain, he has not yet publicly declared where he will play next.
The winger, who is 27 years old, joined Real Mallorca in 2014 and spent a season on loan at Espanyol before making his debut for Real Madrid in August 2016.
Asensio scored 61 goals in 285 games for Madrid, helping them win La Liga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey three times each.
The forward had a powerful impact off the bench but was unable to secure a starting position for Los Blancos.
“I bid Real Madrid farewell with sincere gratitude and a heart full of affection. Wearing this shirt, defending these colors, and being a part of the illustrious history of this iconic club over these seven years of one of its most illustrious stages has been an honor and a privilege. Dear Madrid supporters, I sincerely appreciate your unwavering support. We’ll cross paths again, he added.
