Tunji Wusu –
Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Bola Ahmed Tinubu on becoming the new head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with other well-wishers and supporters.
On Sunday, President Tinubu took over as the head of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government from Guinea-Bissau’s Umaro Embalo.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari expressed his joy at learning that Tinubu had been chosen to lead ECOWAS at its 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
According to Buhari, “West Africans have placed a great deal of trust in our new leader, and it will be our duty as citizens to support him to keep that promise.”
I fervently hope that the Almighty would use his position as head of the Authority of Heads of State and Government to ensure that ECOWAS is once again the bulwark of democracy, exemplary leadership, and a pioneer in the battle against terrorism and climate change on the continent.
Also congratulating President Tinubu on his highly regarded position as the new Chairman of ECOWAS is Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“His stirring speech announcing Nigeria’s revival and our contribution to the expansion and development of the regional economy was motivating. According to Sanwo-Olu, this is a huge reinforcement of Nigeria’s leadership in the continent and the subregion.
As a state, we are dedicated to supporting His Excellency’s vision and the initiatives that will be carried out to guarantee that this area assumes a leading position in the continent.
Tinubu, the newest member of the elite group of West African Heads of State, graciously accepted the honor on behalf of Nigeria.
He promised to uphold the duties of the position and oversee an inclusive management of the regional organization.
The fact that the Nigerian leader received a unanimous vote of support throughout the election process demonstrates the respect and faith that his West African counterparts have in him.
In his congratulations, Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State and senator representing Ogun East in the Senate, expressed his confidence that Tinubu’s “leadership will usher in a robust economic turnaround for the bloc and foster deeper unity, trade, and security among the West African States in the ECOWAS region.”
