Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) nominee for president, has declared he will not mark his 62nd birthday on Wednesday, July 19.
This, according to Obi, is in keeping with his resolve from 20 years ago not to celebrate his birthday as long as the country is in a “deplorable” situation.
“I want to celebrate in a Nigeria where everyone gets along and we can all be proud of Nigeria. This is the real celebration that would benefit all Nigerians, not my birthday, according to Obi.
This was said in a string of tweets sent out by the former governor of Anambra on Monday.
He proclaimed, “I will turn 62 on July 19, 2023. While I am still incredibly grateful to God for His unending mercies, I have decided for more than 20 years that I will not celebrate my birthdays in Nigeria due to the country’s current despicable condition.
But some of my friends, Labour Party members, and OBIdient Family and supporters have requested how they may celebrate that day with me and even bring me some gifts.
“Let me politely and humbly implore all those who wish to honor me with presents of any type to look around them and give such things to those in need, especially now.
“I implore them to make charitable donations when they visit hospitals, orphanages, and residences for the elderly and disabled. Additionally, they can help remote basic education institutions with the essential amenities they require by visiting and visiting them.
“Those who want to take action further might visit various IDP camps across the nation. I’m going to follow suit. In addition to helping those who are less fortunate near me with my time and resources, I want to generate money for institutions like hospitals and schools.
“I’ve previously indicated that we, the leaders and the well-placed, must now begin making sacrifices for a better Nigeria. We must pause and reflect on the status of our country. There is just too much violence, bloodshed, and unrest.
“In the Plateau State region of Mangu LGA, violent attacks have claimed over 200 lives just this month. Similar tragedies have occurred in Benue State, where 27 people were most recently slain in the communities of Adogo Ugbaam, Akpuuna, and Diom in the Ukum LGA.
“I want to celebrate in a Nigeria where everyone gets along and we can all be proud of Nigeria. The real celebration that would benefit all Nigerians is this, not my birthday.
As Nigerians, we must always broaden our conception of what is possible because we think a new Nigeria is possible.
