Tunji Wusu –
In the early hours of July 27, Nigerien soldiers announced a coup on national television.
This comes after the army strongly refused to release president Mohamed Bazoum and blocked entry to the President’s apartment and offices.
Ten senior officers, led by Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane, said that the National Council of the State Guard of the Nation had suspended all institutions, dissolved the constitution, and sealed the borders of the country in the broadcast.
“We, the defense and security forces, have decided to overthrow the established regime. This comes as the security situation has continued to deteriorate and there has been terrible economic and social governance.
All institutions have been put on hold, and the ministers in charge will handle day-to-day operations.
All third parties are requested not to get involved. Borders on land and in the air are shut off until the situation has stabilized, the army declared.
