COALITION CALLS FOR MORE WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP

More chances for women in politics and administration in the current political climate and beyond have been demanded during a three-day meeting in Nigeria of a coalition of civil organizations.

The Girls Democracy Convening, also known as the #SheVotesToo Campaign, is a partnership of youth organizations and associations from all around the nation and the Girls Get Equal Platform in Nigeria.

Under the topic “Amplifying Girls’ Voices For Inclusive Governance,” it was attended by girls, young women, and youths from a variety of backgrounds, as well as campaigners for girl rights, women, and young politicians, and development professionals.

Dr. Ebere Ifendu, the country director of Women in Politics, stated in her speech that the primary goal of the gathering is to develop a democratic Charter of Demand that advocates for the rights and welfare of young Nigerians and an inclusive dialogue platform for addressing key issues affecting girls, young women, and youths.

She continued by saying that in order to assess government commitments and implementation, a citizen scorecard and monitoring matrix will also be jointly created.

The meeting, according to her, is anticipated to produce the Girls Democracy Charter of Demand, a substantial document guiding further advocacy activities, as well as powerful advocacy messaging to encourage girls’ and youths’ engagement in government.

She made the point that the #SheVotesToo Campaign was born out of the necessity for inclusive political involvement and for girls, young women, and youths. She claimed that despite recent advancements, there are still gaps in political commitment and gender-aligned legislation.
