In the Women’s World Cup 2023’s penalty shootout, England defeated Nigeria 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After ending 0-0 after 90 minutes in the Women’s World Cup last-16 match between England and Nigeria, the game was decided by extra time.
Georgia Stanway won the first show in the shootout but missed, as did Desire Oparanozie for Nigeria. But Beth England converted her penalty shot with a strike right in the heart of the goal. With a goal from Rachel Daly, England led 2-0.
The first penalty for Nigeria was scored by Rasheedat Ajibade, but Greenwood soon made it 3-1 before Ucheibe scored to make it 3-2. To advance to the quarterfinals, England needed Chloe Kelly to score, and Kelly succeeded as England overcame Nigeria 4-2 in the shootout.
With three minutes remaining in regulation, Lauren James was sent for stamping Nigerian player Michelle Alozie, reducing European champion England to 10 players.
After 120 minutes of goalless play, England and Nigeria had to settle their quarterfinal matchup on penalties. For the second time in the 2023 World Cup’s knockout rounds, the victor was determined by a penalty shootout.
