In the early hours of Monday, armed bandits stormed the Bungudu local government area’s administrative center in Zamfara State, murdering one person and kidnapping seven others.
On Monday of last week, the bandits attacked the Bungudu Police Division, killing one policeman in the process.
Ishaq Bungudu, a local of Bungudu town, claimed that armed bandits assaulted the community with dangerous weapons, shooting erratically and killing one person.
He said that seven further people were taken hostage, including Abubakar S/Fada Bungudu, a former State Program Officer for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Abdulrahman Hassan, the son of the Emir of Bungudu.
Despite being the closest local government to the state capital Gusau, Ishaq bemoaned the armed bandits’ relentless attacks on the local government offices.
He encouraged Dauda Lawal, the governor of the State, to urgently address the issue of insecurity afflicting the State.
Despite being near to Gusau, the state capital, we are now virtually daily targets of attacks. We don’t know what’s happening, the administration is silent, and the governor hasn’t even hired a security guard since taking office.
Ishaq criticized the president, saying, “He should appoint security aide so that people will know who to call during distress times. We don’t even know what to do now, the bandits will just enter the middle of the town and kill people, it is really disturbing.”
The distance between the local government headquarters and the state capital is around 21 kilometers.
Recall that one policeman was killed a few days ago in two different incidents, and that four officers were killed last month in the same local government region.
A number of phone calls made to ASP Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, were unsuccessful in getting through to him.
