France Football announced its list of candidates for the 2023 Yashin Trophy, Kopa Trophy, Ballon d’Or, and Ballon d’Or for men and women on Wednesday. This marks the return of football’s most coveted honor.
Seven-time Awarded the Ballon d’Or The candidates for the men’s finest players included two standouts: Erling Haaland, who won a treble with Manchester City last season, and Lionel Messi, who will captain Argentina to a World Cup victory in 2022. It’s because these two are expected to compete for the prize. Karim Benzema, the winner in 2022, is also on the list.
Among the women nominated for the Ballon d’Or are Linda Caicedo of Colombia, Aitana Bonmati of Spain, Hinata Miyazawa of Japan, and Golden Boot winner Aitana Bonmati.
World Cup champion Emiliano Martinez of Argentina, Manchester City’s Ederson, and Marc Andre Ter Stegen, among others, have made the shortlist for the Yashin award (best goalkeeper).
The 2022 winner Gavi and the 2021 winner Pedri, both from Barcelona, have been re-included for the Kopa award (best U-21 player). Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid, Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich, and Rasmus Hojlund of Manchester United are among those who have joined them.
