According to a source, the incident could be tied to feeding because the new state comptroller has been accused of slicing food allotment for inmates.
Over the prison attack, the comptroller called an emergency meeting at the Correctional Centre’s administrative office opposite Millennium Park in Calabar.
“The incident happened around 9 p.m.,” claimed a resident in the area who identified himself as Godwin Esu. We could hear gunfire. We understood it had to do with the prison. There was then a stampede. We were told that a cop had been slain after the shooters had fled.”
DSC Effanga Etim, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Cross River State Command, verified the occurrence.
He stated that a statement would be published shortly.
