JUST IN: MILITANTS ATTACK CROSS RIVER PRISON, KILLING A GUARD

Militants are said to have assaulted the Afokang Federal Prison in Cross River State.

A security guard was killed by terrorists who assaulted the prison from the neighboring Calabar waterways.

According to reports, the extremists grabbed his gun.

According to individuals who talked with the Daily Trust, the militants did not gain access to the jail yard and instead worked solely at the main gate.

According to a source, the incident could be tied to feeding because the new state comptroller has been accused of slicing food allotment for inmates.

Over the prison attack, the comptroller called an emergency meeting at the Correctional Centre’s administrative office opposite Millennium Park in Calabar.

“The incident happened around 9 p.m.,” claimed a resident in the area who identified himself as Godwin Esu. We could hear gunfire. We understood it had to do with the prison. There was then a stampede. We were told that a cop had been slain after the shooters had fled.”

DSC Effanga Etim, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Cross River State Command, verified the occurrence.

He stated that a statement would be published shortly.
