Babatunji Wusu –
If the Nigerian Police do not promptly free Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has vowed to sue the government of President Bola Tinubu.
Shortly after the workers began a protest against the unfair treatment they were receiving from the Imo state government, headed by Governor Hope Uzodinma, Mr. Ajaero was detained in Imo state on Wednesday.
In a tweet sent on Wednesday from its official X account, the rights organization demanded that Mr. Ajaero be freed immediately and threatened to sue the Tinubu-led administration if the police did not comply.
“The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, who was purportedly arrested today in Owerri, Imo State, ought to be released by the Tinubu administration right away. If the authorities don’t free him right now, we’ll take legal action,” the SERAP message stated.
The union president’s detention was earlier denounced by Amnesty International, which said that it compromised employees’ rights to unionize, engage in collective bargaining, and take industrial action.
Recall that Ajaero had stated during the demonstration’s demand for it that the strike was a protest against the government’s unfair treatment of Imo State workers, which was spearheaded by Hope Uzodinma.
