Babatunji Wusu –
According to Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Nigerians are split along racial and religious lines as a result of the general election of 2023.
He remarked that until Northerners set aside their tribal and religious differences and united, it would be difficult for the North to reap any political benefits.
In an interview aired on Thursday, he told the BBC Hausa Service that the division had gotten so bad that people were now wary of one another and on their own.
“Now, everything has fully collapsed in the North. The people that brought us into this predicament were unable to fulfill their objective.
“We’ve gone back to the earlier times, and the Yoruba are by themselves. The Igbo people live independently, but we Northerners are split between Muslims and Christians. There are tribes even among us Christians; the Tiv, Idoma, and Kilba may be among them. Michika is present here. We have been attempting to steer clear of this. Now that we are split, how can we come together as a group? It isn’t feasible right now.
When we have killed our own and now wish to put things back together, how can we unite? Not in a manner.
Who among the elders of the North can now convene a gathering of their peers to discuss and come to a consensus? There isn’t any. Although there were some organizations attempting to come together, he noted, “you will find that they are primarily a group of Muslims or a group of Christians.”
Recalled that he and the other elders in the North were asking if they had ever met and no one had ever listened to them, to which Mr. Lawal said that they had been trying in vain.
We simply sit down and look now. We have witnessed what we had anticipated to happen.Saying “I have told you” won’t be polite. However, people are obstinate and unable to recognize their own discomfort. Even though they perceive flames, they flee it. Their issue is that. The day of hardship is here.
He declared as they were leaving the swamp that he didn’t know anything about it and that anyone who did should come forward.
The former SGF expressed disapproval of the CBN’s policy of permitting the importation of specific goods, such as rice, into Nigeria and expressed concern that this would not be beneficial for Nigerian farmers.
