Babatunji Wusu –
Building owners on Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, and other roads along the Ikota River have received a seven-day notice of violation from the Lagos State Government.
Following a thorough inspection trip of System 156 and 157 Channel along Ikota River, the development was announced by Special Adviser for Environment Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu and Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab.
In order to prevent property destruction, they implored Lagosians to adhere to the state’s Drainage Master Plan.
Wahab claimed that once the state’s notifications expired, there was no turning back its determination to execute the law and reclaim drainage setbacks.
The purpose of the inspection trip was to assess the level of compliance by property owners whose buildings and fences are within the allowed seven-meter setback on both sides of the channel and who have been given the option of voluntary compliance.
Wahab revealed that the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) had previously sent a petition complaining about many distortions on their highways.
“We can’t keep blaming the government for flooding when developers, builders, and residents are the primary causes of flooding; we’ll keep enforcing because that’s why laws are made.” “There can be no development without law and order, and this level of bad behavior must stop,” he stated.
The commissioner and his crew also went to Oral Estate II on System 156 in Igbo Efon, where the Primary Channel was completely obstructed by unlawful structures that did not have drainage licenses.
