In order to lower the number of prisoners awaiting trial, Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi has advocated for the application of noncustodial procedures and sentencing criteria under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
At the two-day workshop on Monday, December 4, 2023, in Abuja, on the implementation of non-custodial measures and sentencing guidelines under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, Fagbemi made the call.
Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, Director of the Federal Ministry of Justice’s Administration of Criminal Justice and Reforms Department/Correctional Unit, was in attendance on behalf of the AGF. Additionally, he urged trial judges to cease remanding minor offenders with dangerous criminals, claiming that doing so only served to introduce them to a life of crime rather than to help them change.
He said that finding workable alternatives to locking up criminals is the aim of non-custodial methods.
