GUNMEN ATTACKED THE SUNSHINE STARS TEAM BUS, SERIOUSLY INJURING MANY SQUAD MEMBERS.

On December 7, 2023, an unknown group of individuals attacked the Sunshine Stars bus on the Benin-Ore expressway in Ondo State, causing injuries to the football team manager, players, and other officials.

Following the attack, the squad announced in a statement that they had traveled from their headquarters in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, to Benin, Edo State, in order to attend the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game against Bendel Insurance this coming weekend.

“We regret to notify Nigerians, particularly those who enjoy football, that our squad was attacked a short while ago on the Ore-Benin Expressway in order to honor an Elite League match that was set to take place this weekend against Insurance of Benin.

“Our team manager and other club officials, including players, are seriously injured; our ball boy was shit in the horrible attack,” the team stated.

A squad member was shown in some viral photos lying down on a hospital bed with what appeared to be a major abdominal injury after a blow to the head.
