In Awka, Anambra State, a middle-aged man has been taken into custody on suspicion of k+lling a monkey.

City & Crime claims that as all monkeys are revered in the Awka kingdom, killing one is considered a sacrilegious act.

It is not unusual to witness monkeys running around in people’s compounds without any kind of harassment throughout the entire kingdom.

In a widely shared video, the man who was detained on March 6 for killing the monkey admitted to being an Awka native for 24 years and acknowledging that the community forbids both killing and eating monkeys.

He clarified that he had not deliberately killed the monkey, but had instead placed a trap in the jungle in the hopes of killing other wildlife to consume as a delicacy. Regretfully, the monkey ended up in the trap.
