On Wednesday, courts in Brazil upheld the rape conviction of former AC Milan and Brazil striker Robinho, stipulating that he must complete his nine-year prison sentence there.
The majority ruling during the trial in Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ), which is the highest court in the nation for non-constitutional cases, upheld Italy’s ruling.
Robinho and five other Brazilians were found guilty in 2017 by a Milan court of gang raping a lady in 2013 after giving her drink at a discotheque.
The conviction was upheld in 2020 by an appeals court and in 2022 by the Supreme Court of Italy.
Robinho, 40, a resident of Brazil whose full name is Robson de Souza, has always refuted the accusations.
Since Brazil seldom extradites its people, Italy asked last year for Robinho to complete his prison term in his native nation.
Following the trial, Robinho’s lawyer, Jose Eduardo Alckmin, declared that Robinho would turn himself in to the police as soon as he received official word of the verdict.
The Brazilian court merely looked at whether the Italian sentence was upholdable in Brazil and did not bring up the rape conviction again.
Nonetheless, Robinho expressed his hope that the court would consider the Italian case’s merits in an interview that was aired on Sunday by a local TV station.
He declared, “I was wrongfully convicted in Italy for an incident that never happened.”
