In a tragic development highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Borno State, Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly abducted Justice Haruna Mshelia, a respected Judge from the Borno State High Court, along with his wife, driver, and assistant. The abduction occurred during a daring attack on Monday afternoon along the road connecting Buratai and Buni-gari.

Justice Mshelia, who was traveling back to Maiduguri, where he serves on the High Court bench, fell victim to armed terrorists who emerged suddenly from the forest, blocking his vehicle and forcibly taking him and his companions captive. Despite initial attempts to evade capture, another group of militants intervened, leading to their transportation into the notorious Sambisa Forest.

This stretch of road is critical as it connects the southern region of Borno State with the rest of the state, underscoring its vulnerability to such attacks. Unfortunately, kidnappings by Boko Haram are not uncommon in the region, where the terrorist group continues to operate with impunity, causing immense distress and fear among residents.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions following a recent Boko Haram assault on military vehicles, resulting in the tragic death of a lieutenant and injuries to several others. The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Justice Haruna Mshelia, his wife, orderly, and driver.

Speaking on behalf of the police, ASP Nahum Daso acknowledged receiving a report about the kidnapping on June 21, 2024, near Jiba town along the Biu-Maiduguri Road. He assured the public that despite the lack of direct communication with the kidnappers thus far, law enforcement authorities are diligently pursuing all necessary measures to secure the safe release of the victims.

This abduction serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive security challenges facing Borno State and the broader efforts required to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of its residents against insurgent threats. The community and authorities alike are united in their hope for the swift and safe return of Justice Haruna Mshelia and those abducted with him.
