The Northeast zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially endorsed Umar Iliya Damagum to continue serving as the acting National Chairman of the party. This endorsement was announced in a statement on Thursday by Humwashi Wonosikou, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.

This decision comes amid calls from some party stakeholders for Damagum to resign and for the Northcentral to nominate a permanent National Chairman. Despite this agitation, Governor Fintiri expressed strong support for Damagum’s leadership in a statement representing the PDP in Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe states.

The statement highlighted that a Federal High Court in Abuja had issued a restraining order preventing the removal of Damagum from his position, urging party members to adhere to this legal ruling. “The PDP in Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe states has endorsed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum’s leadership as Acting National Chairman,” Fintiri stated.

The Governor praised Damagum for restoring public confidence in the party and noted the impressive performance of the PDP in the Northeast during the 2023 elections. He argued that the region deserves the National Chairman position more than any other part of the North.
