Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has arrived in New York to represent the country at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This announcement was made by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, on Monday.

Shettima touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the early hours of Monday, where he was welcomed by a delegation that included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, along with other officials and dignitaries.

Following President Bola Tinubu’s directives, Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation at this year’s assembly, delivering the nation’s statement and participating in high-level discussions with global leaders.

The 79th session of the UNGA is particularly significant as it aims to accelerate progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Central to the assembly is the “Summit of the Future,” which emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced global cooperation to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, poverty, inequality, and the effects of ongoing conflicts and health crises.

From September 23 to 27, the UN’s Department of Global Communications will host the SDG Media Zone, featuring interviews and discussions on key global challenges. During this period, Heads of State and Government will convene to address shortcomings in global governance revealed by recent events.

The summit aims to reaffirm commitment to the SDGs and the UN Charter while strengthening international collaboration to adapt to contemporary challenges. A key outcome will be the “Pact for the Future,” a framework designed to bolster multilateral cooperation and respond to the urgent needs of today and the future.
