Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has asserted that, 64 years after independence, Nigeria has yet to experience a genuinely free and fair election. He conveyed this message in his Independence Day address to Nigerians on October 1, 2024.
Atiku reflected on the nation’s tumultuous journey, emphasizing that the determination of its patriotic citizens, bolstered by the support of international allies, has strengthened Nigeria’s resilience. He expressed pride in the establishment of democracy, noting that Nigeria is currently in the longest period of democratic governance in its history.
However, he pointed out that while democratic principles have taken root in the country’s institutions, there remains a pressing need to enhance political inclusivity and ensure that elections are genuinely fair and free. He also recalled the efforts of Nigeria’s founding fathers, who united under a common cause and championed independence through peaceful political activism.
