The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), through its Vegetable Production Center, is set to train farmers on cultivating the F1 variety of bell pepper in greenhouses. This variety, known for its early ripening, resistance to disease, and robust growth, is a highly productive hybrid that requires no staking. The announcement came from Professor Ayo Olalusi, head of vegetable production, during a recent visit by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, to the university’s Greenhouse Research Farm.
Professor Olalusi highlighted that the F1 bell pepper boasts several advantages over traditional types, including a sweet flavor, large fruit size (10-11 cm wide and 11-12 cm long), and a weight of 250-280 grams. The greenhouse-exclusive cultivation process makes FUTA’s support pivotal for interested farmers, as the university offers guidance for both small and large-scale production.
Professor Oladiji applauded the greenhouse team’s dedication, sharing her vision to expand FUTA’s training offerings to include F1 tomatoes and other crops as part of the university’s community impact and revenue growth strategy.
