Babatunji Wusu –
The Nigerian Army has declared 43 soldiers, who were deployed to combat Boko Haram in Borno State, as wanted for desertion. These soldiers were part of the 403 Amphibious Brigade stationed in the Baga community and were expected to report for duty by October 31, 2024. However, they have been absent for over a month without any notification.
In a military statement signed by Major HO Akoh on behalf of the Brigade Commander, it was revealed that the bank accounts of the missing soldiers have been frozen. Furthermore, military authorities warned of severe repercussions if the soldiers are located. Notifications have been sent to various army units, instructing them to apprehend any of the deserters found within their jurisdictions.
The statement, dated November 1, highlights the following key points:
- Desertion Declaration: The 43 soldiers are officially declared absent without leave (AWOL) effective November 1, 2024.
- Deadline for Reporting: The soldiers were required to report by October 31, but they failed to do so.
- Financial Consequences: Their salary accounts have been frozen pending disciplinary action.
- Immediate Action Required: Other military formations have been tasked with locating and detaining the absentees.
This situation underscores the military’s stringent measures to address desertion and maintain discipline within its ranks.
