The Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) has allocated 899,000 Mpox vaccine doses to nine African countries, including Nigeria, in response to the Mpox outbreak across the continent, as announced by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.
The joint statement from AAM partners, including Africa CDC, CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF, and WHO, underscored the need to manage limited vaccines effectively. “This allocation ensures a fair distribution to control outbreaks in heavily affected areas,” the statement noted.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the epicenter with four out of five confirmed cases, will receive 85 percent of the vaccines. Other affected countries include the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda.
The vaccines, contributed by Canada, Gavi, the European Union, and the United States, will be part of a broad Mpox response involving vaccination, timely testing, clinical care, and community engagement.
