Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, defended the treason charges filed against minors involved in the recent EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria, emphasizing that no law prohibits minors from facing prosecution. After the Law Corridor, a law firm’s new complex was commissioned on Thursday, Fagbemi stated, “No law in this country says a minor cannot be tried.”
President Bola Tinubu, however, ordered the charges dropped on compassionate grounds. “The president is a father and grandfather, and that compassion guided his decision to release these young men,” Fagbemi said, crediting Tinubu for his humane approach. The Federal High Court in Abuja struck out two treason cases against 119 arrested protestors, including 32 minors, after the AGF withdrew charges on Tinubu’s instructions.
