Lagos Assembly Crisis: Police Restore Obasa’s Security Details

The security details of impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, have been restored, while those of the incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, leading to the election of his deputy, Meranda, as the new Speaker, making her the first female Speaker in the state’s history.

However, recent developments suggest that Obasa may soon reclaim his position. According to sources, key stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) have intervened in the Assembly crisis, paving the way for his possible return.

Reports indicate that high-ranking APC figures, including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Justice Commissioner Dr. Muiz Banire, and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), held a meeting over the weekend. At the meeting, lawmakers were reportedly instructed to reinstate Obasa, as his impeachment was deemed illegal.

Although no official date has been set for his return, sources suggest that the Assembly may soon reconvene to formalize the decision. Meanwhile, Speaker Meranda has yet to step down, despite the political pressure.

The crisis escalated further two weeks ago when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the Assembly complex, leading to a commotion that forced Meranda to adjourn plenary indefinitely.

With tensions high and political maneuvers ongoing, all eyes remain on the Lagos State House of Assembly as it navigates this leadership crisis.
