– Lawmakers demand Justice Enebeli’s appearance within 48 hours
– Warns of arrest warrant for non-compliance
– Urges Governor Fubara to submit unscreened commissioner nominees
The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), to appear before lawmakers over the conduct of the 2024 local government elections.
Presiding over Wednesday’s plenary, Speaker Martin Amaewhule warned that failure to honor the summons would trigger an arrest warrant against the RSIEC chairman.
In another resolution, the Assembly pressed Governor Siminalayi Fubara to forward the names of commissioner nominees who were not screened by the Amaewhule-led legislature.
Meanwhile, RSIEC has set August 9, 2025, for fresh local government council elections, unveiling the date and guidelines during a stakeholders’ meeting at its Port Harcourt headquarters.
Justice Enebeli assured political parties of a transparent and credible process, urging compliance with electoral rules.
This development follows the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections and sacked 23 LGA chairmen for violating Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
