A deadly explosion occurred on Wednesday at the Karu bridge in the Nyanya area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), after a gas tanker burst into flames, engulfing several vehicles and causing panic among residents and commuters.
At least seven bodies have been recovered so far, according to emergency responders, while rescue operations are still ongoing. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), firefighters, and other security agencies are on the scene working to control the situation.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before seeing massive flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Some individuals were seen fleeing from their vehicles as the fire rapidly spread across the area.
The incident has caused a severe traffic gridlock along the Nyanya-Mararaba axis, leaving many commuters stranded, with some abandoning their vehicles to seek alternative routes.
Officials are yet to confirm the cause of the explosion, and it remains unclear how many people were injured or the extent of property damage.
