A combined team of soldiers and vigilantes has killed at least 12 suspected bandits in a fierce gunfight during a joint military operation in the Kurfi-Safana axis of Katsina State.
The state government, through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Muazu, confirmed the successful operation in a statement issued Thursday morning.
Muazu disclosed that the operation was launched following intelligence reports of an early morning attack on Rahamawa village in Kuraye District of Charanchi Local Government Area at about 5:40am.
“Armed bandits attacked the village, severely injuring a 60-year-old resident, Alhaji Danmalam, and rustling 22 cattle. The joint patrol team comprising Police, Army, Community Watch, and Vigilante groups swiftly pursued the attackers and engaged them in a gun battle at Dutsen Falale,” the statement read.
The confrontation, according to Muazu, resulted in the death of twelve bandits and the recovery of five AK-47 rifles, several rounds of ammunition, and all the stolen cattle.
Tragically, Alhaji Danmalam succumbed to his injuries at the Primary Health Care Centre in Charanchi, while one soldier was wounded and is currently receiving medical care. One vigilante also lost his life during the operation.
“We mourn the brave vigilante who paid the ultimate price defending his community. This operation is a testament to our unwavering resolve to safeguard the lives and property of our citizens,” Muazu added.
The commissioner praised the synergy between security agencies and local vigilante groups and reaffirmed the Katsina State Government’s commitment to eradicating banditry and restoring peace across troubled communities.
