-Veteran forward breaks free-kick record, tops MLS goal chart
-Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner scores in fifth straight match with a brace
Lionel Messi continued his red-hot form in Major League Soccer as he fired Inter Miami to a 2-0 victory over Nashville SC on Saturday, scoring in both halves to extend his own MLS record of consecutive multi-goal matches.
The Inter Miami captain, who turned 38 last month, opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a curling free-kick — his 69th career goal from a direct free-kick — before sealing the win in the 62nd minute after calmly rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.
With the brace, Messi has now netted multiple goals in five straight MLS games, a feat never before achieved in the league’s history. He had already set the record last week after scoring in four consecutive games with at least two goals each.
The Argentine now shares the top spot on the MLS scoring chart with Nashville’s Sam Surridge, both sitting on 16 goals.
Messi’s consistency has helped propel Inter Miami’s strong run in the league, as they continue to push for top playoff seeding with their talisman in unstoppable form.
