During a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session in Abuja, President Tinubu paid a heartfelt tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in London after a brief illness. Addressing cabinet ministers and senior officials, Tinubu described Buhari as a man of discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.
Though acknowledging that no leader is perfect, Tinubu emphasized Buhari’s integrity, calling him a “good, decent, and honourable man” whose moral standards and incorruptible character will endure beyond scrutiny. He highlighted Buhari’s austere leadership style, noting his resistance to political pressure and applause, and his commitment to doing what was right rather than popular.
Reflecting on their political partnership, Tinubu recalled Buhari’s calm stewardship during Nigeria’s historic 2015 transition—the first peaceful democratic transfer of power between ruling parties. He praised Buhari’s composed bearing under the weight of office.
In a significant tribute, Tinubu announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, symbolizing Buhari’s legacy in a region deeply affected by insurgency where his administration invested heavily in security and reconstruction.
While recognizing that every legacy faces critics, Tinubu urged Nigerians to honor Buhari’s steadfast dedication to national service, integrity, and discipline. Tributes poured in nationwide from civil society, religious leaders, and citizens alike.
